Questions to ask so you get the right Scissor Lift...

Working Height vs platform height - Determine the height you need to reach for your project, working height, aka reach, is different to platform height(the actual height of the deck you are standing on). Typically, an 8m scissor lift has an 6m reach, and platform height of 6m. If you need to reach a 9m ceiling height, and 8m scissor lift will be too high unless your operator is 3m tall.

Indoor or Outdoor Use - Electric slab scissor lifts are generally preferred for indoor use but most have a zero wind rating to keep their overall weight and cost down. Diesel models are suitable for rougher terrains, extra weight and stabilisers gives them a better wind tolerance. All EWPs have a comprehensive manual on board and safety stickers stating tolerances and weights.

Platform Size - Consider the number of workers and materials that need to be on the platform. Some machines are designed for heavier loads, and some have longer decks.

Runtime - Electric scissor lifts have a limited runtime and may need to be recharged. The time can vary depending on the work load of the machine. Generally speaking, diesel scissor and boom lifts run quiet economically but its always good to keep track of fuel use.

Transport - Check if the hire company offers transport or if you need to arrange it yourself. Many of the smaller slab scissor lifts can be put on specialised plant trailers and towed with are suitable vehicle, beware, they are a lot heavier than you think. As a rule of thumb, the higher you go, the heavier the EWP will be as the extra weight is need for counter balance. So also means the truck delivering to site may be larger than you anticipated.

Training - Ensure that all operators are properly trained and certified to operate scissor lifts. This is a no brainer, scissor lifts incidents are deadly and costly, make sure your operator knows what they are doing.

Safety - Follow all safety guidelines and regulations when using a scissor lift. Again they can be found on this site and each machines has a manual and log book specific to the manufacturers requirements.

Cost - Scissor lift hire prices can vary based on the size, height, and type of lift. If you use a specialised scissor lift hire company like Swift Construction Hire, you will often get better pricing than a boarder general hire company.
